WHAT IS BIOTECHNOLOGY?

Biotechnology is the study and manipulation (changing) of living things or their component molecules, cells, tissues, or organs. It is used in the production of products we see in everyday life, such as vaccines, penicillin, and allergy medicine. It can also be used to develop new medical treatments, such as gene therapy for cystic fibrosis, a hereditary disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. Biotechnology has additional applications in areas such as food production, the remediation (cleanup) of environmental pollution, forensics, etc.  Many examples of modern biotechnology depend on the ability to analyze, manipulate, and cut-and-paste pieces of DNA, sometimes referred to as DNA technology (i.e. rDNA, polymerase chain reaction, gel electrophoresis, and DNA sequencing).

ALL ABOUT BIOTECH@LL2

This course is an introduction to the techniques and principles used in today’s biotech industry, including rDNA technology, DNA fingerprinting, and protein analysis. As we study these concepts, we will also examine many of the ethical issues that surround biotechnological advances in medicine, agriculture, industry and the environment. This class is a Career Technical Education (CTE) course, so the focus will be building your skills, knowledge, and critical thinking in the lab.  As you work through lab protocols and the challenge of analyzing results, you will develop personal and interpersonal skills that will help build resilience and the ability to thrive in any workplace.
